Music Analysis Questions

The track we decided to make a music video to out of our original ideas was ‘Sowing Season’ by Brand New. We chose this track as it doesn’t have a video and is not very well know; also it conveys a lot of emotion that we can get across in our narrative effectively and dramatically.
Who will be your target audience?
Our target audience is fans of rock music in their youth, up to about 26. The video will appeal to them as it is of someone around the same age and maybe they will be able to relate to the narrative, not necessarily the alcoholism but the idea of loosing people for different reasons and how much it can affect you.
What genre of music is your chosen track?
Our track ‘Sowing Season’ by Brand New is a rock song. This is not the choice of music we would particularly listen to all the time but we found that this was a suitable song for our task and emotions are quite easily shown through this type of music in turn aiding our production of our narrative music video. As it is rock it also makes it easier to bring in the performance parts of the video as it isn’t boring to watch a band play and we can get good shots of facial expressions and instrument playing, for example on the singers face when he shouts ‘Yeah’ and the guitarists hand when there is a significant piece of guitar music.
What conventions does this style of music use in its videos?
The most obvious convention of a rock music video is that they are both performance and narrative based, as this is the main convention we chose to follow this so it is a more realistic production and enjoyable for our target audience. We did however decide to also use the band in our narrative which isn’t so common as this adds a unique twist on our creation therefore making it more appealing to the target audience. the narrative of many rock songs is to do with a romance, we have also gone down this route but adding extras like his family and friends in to make the point of the story more clear.
Another convention is that they often show the band logo in the videos, this is normally on the shots that are of the band performing so the fans know who it is and even other people can recognise them. This is partly for advertising reasons and also just so the bands trademark is shown, even though normally not for long.
What type of music video will you film?
Our music video has a narrative base with elements of performance when the band is playing. The band is incorporated into our narrative throughout though with the main character seeing them at a gig. We chose to have a combination of both as the band we have created like to display themselves so their fans can see them and it will draw more in, also so they can convey the passion they have; we chose to do narrative rather than all performance so it is a more interesting video and we believe it adds a lot more depth to the song as well.
Describe the characters in your music video.
Our video is based on one main character who is a male in his early 20’s. He is an alcoholic which what our narrative is about; we have other characters to that are introduced through flashbacks throughout this includes some care free male friends and his long term girlfriend who loves him. The girlfriend in included to emphasise how much damage the drink abuse causes, this matches the song as its about destruction and loosing friends and things that are important to anyone especially a male still in his youth.
We have also featured the band in our video; this consists of four males also in their youth. These don’t really have a persona that is needed to be shown in the video all we will see from them is their passion for music which coincides with the deep emotion being shown through our narrative.
Where will you film your video?
Our video is being filmed in a variety of different locations. We are filming on a built up road with buildings on either side, a forest in Brentwood with a walkway down the middle and tree’s either side. We are also using a garage and the street that is on, Brentwood High Street and Starbucks coffee shop. We also are going to use a road in Brentwood that we are able to walk to, too film the shots of the car incident. Another place we are filming is in a gig and outside the gig.
What type of institution will show your music video?
The type of music channel that would show our music video would be ‘Scuzz’ and ‘Kerang’ , which ‘Kerang’ being a larger institution. This would attract more of an audience as the type of people that would be interested in watching our music video would be watching this channel anyway as it is a rock based channel.
How do media technologies affect the consumption of music videos?
The consumption of music videos has changed drastically as technologies have advanced. To begin with the place commonly to watch music videos was on TV on programmes such as Top Of The Pops and children’s programmes on weekend mornings. Then the music industry grew and they introduced more channels specifically for music and the launch of the MTV channels in 1981 made it grow even more, now there are different channels for different types of music so you can go straight to what you want so the consumer gets what they want instead of having to wait and loosing interest. Also with the growth and easier access to the internet more and more people now watch music videos online as the world wide web has grown so much. Often places such as YouTube are used as the 1st source for new music videos now.
